Los Angeles, May 17, 2013 – Outfest – the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization promoting equality by creating, sharing, and protecting LGBT stories on the screen – announced today that Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s “C.O.G.,” the first film adaptation of David Sedaris’s work, has been selected as the Opening Night Gala of the 31st Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival on Thursday, July 11. “C.O.G.” is written and directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, based on the short story by David Sedaris, and stars Jonathan Groff, Denis O’Hare, Corey Stoll, Dean Stockwell, Casey Wilson and Troian Bellisario.

The entry starring Jonathan Groff has received an eight-episode order and comes after the loss of scores of LGBT characters on TV in last week’s wave of network cancellations.

HBO is heading to San Francisco. The premium cable network has handed out series orders to its untitled Michael Lannan project, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The eight-episode dramedy hails from Bored to Death’s Sarah Condon and Lannan and stars Glee and Boss alum Jonathan Groff as one of three friends in San Francisco who explore the fun and sometimes overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men.

C.O.G. is set to screen at the 2013 BAMcinemaFest in New York. Screening dates are yet to be announced.

Adapted from a chapter in David Sedaris’ superb story collection Naked (the first film version of Sedaris’ work), C.O.G. stars musical theater and TV star Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening and Glee) as David, a recent Yale grad who gets his hands dirty at an Oregon apple orchard in a vainglorious search for Thoreau-esque self-discovery. When his best friend and would-be fellow apple picker bails on him, he seeks companionship from a series of mentors (each scarier than the last) who provide harsh lessons on faith, friendship, love, and identity. Charming and witty as the young hero, Groff is the perfect mouthpiece for Sedaris’ indelible voice, and writer-director Alvarez imbues the story with heartbreak and a surprising degree of darkness. Matthew Morrison and Jonathan Groff, both from Fox’s “Glee,” were on hand adding to the fun of the Gala. Morrison received the prestigious Ally for Equality Award during the event. The quote of the evening, by far, came from Groff as he introduced Morrison. While explaining that Morrison had fought stereotypes as a straight ally doing musical theatre, Groff opined, “a man who likes to sing and dance must also like to suck a dick.” Groff was both charming and brutally honest setting the tone for Morrison’s keynote speech. BroadwayWorld.com has learned that Ryan Murphy’s upcoming HBO adaptation of THE NORMAL HEART on HBO will begin filming in June of 2013 in New York City.

The cast officially includes Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks, Julia Roberts as Dr. Emma Brookner, Matt Bomer as Felix Turner, Jim Parsons as Tommy Boatwright, Taylor Kitsch as Bruce Niles, Joe Mantello as Mickey Marcus, Jonathan Groff as Craig, Bruce Niles’ first lover. No actor has yet been announced for Ben Weeks, but we’re told that an offer is out. Casting is underway for other parts as well.

Executive produced by Murphy, Jason Blum (the “Paranormal Activity” series, “The Reader”), Dede Gardner (“The Tree of Life,” “Eat Pray Love”) and Dante di Loreto (“Glee,” HBO’s “Temple Grandin”), THE NORMAL HEART tells the story of the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s, taking an unflinching look at the nation’s sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical Community fought to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city in denial.

In 1981, writer Larry Kramer hosted a gathering of six gay men and their friends to discuss the “gay cancer,” and to talk about fundraising for research. This informal meeting in Kramer’s home would lead to the formation of Gay Men’s Health Crisis, one of the first advocacy groups for HIV prevention and care. [ X ]

Glee actor Jonathan Groff has signed on for a dramatic role in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming HBO film The Normal Heart. The film is based on a largely autobiographical play by Larry Kramer chronicling the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. Groff will play Craig, an early victim of the disease and the first lover of Bruce Niles (Friday Night Light‘s alum Taylor Kitsch), an investment banker who becomes an AIDS activist.

Also just cast: Longtime character actor Joe Mantello as Mickey Marcus, a man who’s an instrumental member of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis.

The actors join previously announced cast members such as Julia Roberts (Dr. Emma Brookner), Mark Ruffalo (Ned Weeks), Matt Bomer (Felix Turner) and Jim Parsons (Tommy Boatwright). The Normal Heart is expected to premiere next year.
